I find this very funny when people ask me how are ya? How do you do? etc. When i was in india, i hear this question very rarely. But in US i hear this a lot. If i could be more speciffic, may be 20-30 times in a day atleast. Dosth, i am sure you may be thinking why this is funnier to me?
When i go to get coffee at my office, i used to get a Good Morning How are ya? etc. On my way back i will still get the same Good Morning How are ya? etc from the same person. What will change in 5 minutes? Do i really need to answer him, I am fine. I found this very difficult initially. Later this became a part of me. I started asking the same to whoever i come across in the office.
One day i was thinking if i really find this annoying why am i doing the same. Why should i imitate some else? Do i get anything good in saying this? uh lots of ?'s and i dint knew the answer to these.
Later i found out that this was just a way of getting along with people. Its just the way of acknowledging their presence. We normally give a smile as an acknowledgement back in india and Here in US this is the way they do it. Now i feel really good doing it. All those faces to whom i say this became familliar to me. Once in a Conference Meeting i had, i met a lot of new people. Funny thing is i remeber most of their faces and so do they. This made us all mingle much more better.
